First-Time Parents of Twins? Here’s Everything You’re Going to Need

Having twins means double everything. It means twice the effort, happiness, and, most especially, double the clothes. As first-time parents of twins, it can be overwhelming to figure out the things you’ll need.

As I’ve mentioned in this piece on Looking After Twins, it’s doable but it will take you some time to adjust. Fortunately, however, having the right essentials for twins will make the job easier.

Everything you’ll need as first-time parents of twins:

Backpack Changing Bag

Carrying double the amount of nappies, wipes, extra clothes, and other essentials can be a hard task. Luckily, a backpack changing bag provides you with more space to fit all of these things in. This backpack changing bag by Tiba & Marl has lots of space and extra compartments — perfect for parents of twins. Some changing bags even have multiple bottle holders that are also insulated, so watch out for those. It’s also beneficial to buy bags that have built-in clips so you can attach them to a pushchair for convenience. Make sure to get a backpack changing bag that has padded shoulder straps for comfort since double the items means double the weight.

Twin Nursing Pillow

Feeding two babies at once will numb your arms. Fortunately, there are twin nursing pillows that will let you feed your twins without sacrificing your comfort. Babies can wiggle and move a lot, which makes it difficult to place them in the correct position for feeding. The twin nursing pillow from TwinZ will assist you during breastfeeding or bottle-feeding. One baby alone spends a total of four hours a day breastfeeding, so it’s crucial to have them (and yourself) comfortable. Some nursing pillows have straps so you can attach them to your body for back support. Others are L-shaped to accommodate postpartum recovery or C-section pains. What’s vital is that you choose a nursing pillow fit for your needs, whether you’re breast or bottle feeding.

Double Pushchairs

Travelling or simply walking with twins is no easy feat. Thankfully, double pushchairs are available for this reason and you will only need to push one contraption for two babies! The double pushchairs on iCandy are created out of sturdy materials and can carry a collective weight of up to 25kg, making them future-proof. You won’t have to buy another pushchair even when they grow into toddlers. They also use a tandem design which makes them narrow enough to fit through most doors, making them perfect to bring anywhere. Pushchairs nowadays also have canopies that offer SPF50+ protection for outdoor use, so keep that in mind when shopping for the perfect one.

Twin Baby Carrier

Holding both your babies at the same time is a near-impossible task. Thus, you will need assistance from twin baby carriers so you can have your babies safe and close to you while you attend to tasks, if you want. The twin baby carrier from TwinGo will carry your twins without straining your arms or back. There are many baby carriers at present that are adjustable as your babies grow, and provide head support for their safety. Many carriers also have detachable hoods to protect your babies whenever you’re outdoors. Make sure to get a carrier that has padded shoulder straps for support and durability.

Baby Car Seats

Bringing your twins in the car will be a hazard risk if you don’t have good car seats. The baby car seats from Boots are suitable from birth up until early childhood. It can be used in the rear-facing position from birth to 10 kg, and then forward-facing until the child is 18 kg. Choose car seats with cushioned buckle pads so they don’t dig into your babies’ skin. It’s also good to buy car seats that have removable covers so they can be thrown in the wash when they get soiled with food or liquids. For first-time parents of twins, having two babies won’t be a breeze. However, with the right essentials, you’ll learn the ropes in no time. Make sure to prepare everything you’ll need for your twins to ensure that they (and you!) have a seamless experience.
